RMS Athens Shipwreck in Cape Town, South Africa
Looking out across the Cape Peninsula, a dark shape breaks the surface. This iron remnant is part of the engine block of the Royal Mail Ship Athens , lost here in the year 1865.
In early May that same year, Table Bay lay under an uneasy calm. Warm days and light winds settled over the anchorage, tempting captains into a confidence.
The small-boat men of Cape Town, however, who knew the moods of this coast, felt something else in the air. They recognised the stillness not as peace, but as a warning of disaster in its approach.
